Things Every Doodle Tribe Needs

Anyone who owns a Goldendoodle (and other Doodles) knows that there’s a loyal tribe of the Doodle-obsessed. I am one of those people.

In case you don’t know what a Goldendoodle is (gasp!), here are a few facts. They are a mixture of a Poodle and Golden Retriever. Labradoodles, though similar, are Poodle/Labrador mixes. There are also Bernedoodles (Bernese Mountain/Poodle) and Aussiedoodles (Australian Shepherd/Poodle). They began to enter the scene in the 1990’s and were bred for their light/non-shedding coats, making them more allergy-friendly. Their sizes range from mini (15-30 lbs.) to medium (30-45 lbs.) to standard (45+ lbs.), and their colors range from white to black. Doodles are highly intelligent, loving, loyal, silly, affectionate companions — and a constant entertainment, each with their own unique, “human-like” personalities.

My husband Matt surprised me with our Goldendoodle fur baby, Rudy, a few years ago when I was feeling the weight of our infertility struggles. I had recently transitioned from working in an office to working at home as a freelance writer — and I was lonely. Not only was I desiring companionship, but I expressed my desire to lavish my motherly qualities on someone — furry or not!

In true thoughtfulness and love, Matt surprised me on our anniversary with our little golden baby. I was off celebrating my grandmother’s birthday while Matt told me he had to work that weekend. I had no clue he was actually three hours south of us picking up Rudy (or “Teal Boy” as he was listed).

Rudy is our pride and joy — and are we obsessed? Yes, very. He’s always the first to get hugs and kisses when one of us comes home; we’ll move out of the way on the couch so he’s comfortable; we’ve thrown him birthday parties, cake and all; and we’ve discussed putting in writing who would take care of Rudy in the event that Matt and I both died. He even has his own Instagram account with nearly 4,000 followers to date. Yes, wildly and proudly obsessed!

Even as I sit writing his blog post, Rudy is faithfully cuddled up next to me. His mere presence gives me peace and joy (even if he’s stealing butter off the counter or shredding napkins), and I thank the Lord for blessing me with him.

I never imagined that a voiceless animal could speak so deeply into my life. I have learned strong parallels between my relationship with Rudy and my relationship with the Lord — and I’m aware that may sound silly. Rudy has anxiety and fear issues, and I relate to that. So when I’m guiding and encouraging Rudy to not be afraid, that I’m protecting him, that I know he’ll have fun, I’m humbled to realize that it’s not so different from how I treat the Lord under the same circumstances. I see his need for my guidance, protection, and discipline — and it causes me to realize that I need to seek my Father for guidance, protection, and discipline too. Running off-leash isn’t always the best decision for both of us.

But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
    or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
    or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
    that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
    and the breath of all mankind.

Thank the Lord for our furry friends and what they are able to teach us about our Heavenly Father!
